Sportage Helmet
English Chaps/Boots/Helmets
Manufacturer: Tipperary
Model: Sportage Helmet
Category: English Chaps/Boots/Helmets
Purchase: My boyfriend, who rides western, needed a helmet to enter a series of local gymkhanas (as per club rules). He never rode in a helmet before, so shopping for one was traumatic!
As an english rider, this is one of my strong points. Helmets are the staple of english attire, regardless of whether you ride dressage, hunters or for pleasure only.
Being scared by the variety of velvet covered helmets, my boyfriend was convinced that he'd never find one to suit his western look.
Fortunately, Tipperary came out with the Sportage, an english helmet that looks different from the rest. He paid approximately $90 Cdn for this from Greenhawk.
Likes: It fits my boyfriend properly and he's not complaining about how it looks!
He opted for the grey helmet, over the blue and green versions. It's the most subtle colour.
The nylon harness is comfortable to him and the back of the helmet is designed to cradle the back of his head more so then other helmets.
The vents have mesh covering them so leaves or twigs can't fall through, and the helmet is relatively cool in the summer.
Dislikes: While it's not a problem for him, I can see that if someone were to wear a ponytail - even a low one, the helmet probably wouldn't fit properly.
I also see that, for the english rider, Tipperary offers an optional velvet cover for the helmet.. though with it's unique shape, it looks a bit odd with the cover.
Quality: Good quality.. Tipperary is a great company.
The helmet comes with 2 sizing pads to ensure a proper fit. The part of the nylon harness that sits below your chin has a leather piece around it. I don't see it offering any protection.. it looks more like decoration to blend in with the other leather accents.
Summary: Nice helmet that's suitable for western riders. Though my boyfriend continues to ride without a helmet outside of gymkhanas, he's got no complaints on wearing it at gymkhanas.
And it seems as if he may have started a little trend.. some of the western riders around are also opting for the Tipperary!
