Purchase: Virkon is an antibacterial powder that can be bought in small packets for under $5 at feed stores or tack shops, or in a bigger bottle for $40. It is a pale pink powder that you mix lightly with water (turns the water pink and foams a bit like soap).
Virkon powder is very strong stuff, used for general cleaning of places like Veterinary hospitals where no germs is very important.
It is used very sparingly (about one teaspoon or less per 750ml of water) and it has proved to be a very potent yet gentle treatment for fungal infections on horses like Scratches or Rain Rot.
Likes: It can be used once mixed with water (cold, lukewarm, warm) directly to the fungal infection with a squirt bottle (like an old dishwasher soap bottle), or in cooperation with epsom salts in a soak if the infection is on the fetlock and lower legs (this is usually where it develops).
It doesn't sting or irritate, and it kills the fungus faster than any other product or method I've ever tried.
Dislikes: The powder shouldn't be handled with bare hands or inhaled, as it is a very strong chemical. Once it's in a dilution of water, it's fine.
Because it's a liquid, some horses may have issues with it touching them, being sprayed on, or putting their foot in a bucket. I can say that my own horse, who has never failed to get a fungal infection on his three white legs, does not notice or care about the treatment. He is an older experienced horse, but he's the biggest wimp in the horse world. If there was any stinging or irritation, he would have loud objections.
Quality: Very potent, and takes three times less time and treatments to clear up an external fungal infection. Coupled with Penicillin (talk to your vet) in serious cases, it is the best remedy for things like Scratches and Rain Rot I've ever seen.
Summary: A safe, potent treatment for fungal skin infections. External use only, diluted with water only.
Use at own risk- young and inexperienced horses may have objections to water or spray-bottle sounds.
