Purchase: After trying to find braiding elastics or thread to match the flaxen mane and tail of my horse, I gave up. The natural coloured materials were too yellow, the white ones were too bright.
I looked up braiding information online and noticed that some people use regular knitting yarn to braid their horses. Bernat seemed to be a popular choice among pros, so I figured I'd give it a shot.
I bought a 3 1/2oz ball of Bernat Satin yarn in Sable (which matches my horses mane and tail very closely) for about $3.00 from Zellers.
Likes: The yarn is super strong. I can cut a piece and hold it in both hands, pulling it as tight as possible. It doesn't break.
Knots hold tight and don't come out unless you cut them with scissors or a seam ripper.
The colour is the closest I've found to my horses mane and tail, out of all the products I've looked at. Funny how I spent a lot of time browsing through tack stores with no luck, but found what I needed in the craft section at a department store.
Dislikes: I don't know if Bernat makes this yarn on a roll, but that would be really handy.
With the ball, I'm a bit worried about unwrapping a section and the whole thing coming apart in my hands.
Quality: 100% acrylic.
Great quality. I bet Bernat never thought their knitting products would do great in the horse world!
Summary: Braiding with yarn is a lot more secure then using elastics, especially since they snap at the worst possible time (usually the minute you head into the show ring).
I'll continue to use this yarn until either a.) I stop showing or b.) Bernat stops making this product (highly unlikely).
