Easy Change Gullet System
English Miscellaneous
Manufacturer: Wintec / Bates
Model: Easy Change Gullet System
Category: English Miscellaneous
Purchase: When I bought my Wintec 500 A/P saddle, the tack store (Apple Saddlery in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) was kind enough to throw in the Wintec / Bates Easy Change Gullet System for free! Regularly they sell for around $100 Cdn.
Since I ride a variety of horses, this probably would've been my next purchase after the saddle anyway, so it was nice to get it at the same time.
Likes: The gullets are all made of spring steel and are heat tempered so they won't spread or change shape.
I like that Wintec includes everything you'll need to adjust your saddle in the kit. I find that, in general, Wintec products are very user friendly.
Having the whole gullet system on hand is great. I don't have to worry about buying another gullet, as everything is in my tack room.
Dislikes: Some people have complained that changing the gullet in Wintec or Bates saddles is a pain in the rear.
I'd agree - until you get used to it. With practice, it does get easier.
I can offer one tip though, to anyone who gets frustrated: Don't tighten one side of the gullet and then try to tighten the other. It won't work - things won't be aligned properly.
Instead, only half tighten one of the gullet screws (that is, turn it a couple times so it stays in the hole, but no further). Then half tighten the other gullet screw. It seems to work easier this way. Once both screws are in (and make sure you haven't cross-threaded them!) then you can tighten everything down without a problem.
Quality: This gullet system fits both Wintec and Bates english saddles.
It includes 6 gullets (narrow, medium narrow, medium, medium wide, wide and extra wide). All are colour coded to correspond with the appropriate measurement on the Easy Measure Gullet Gauge (also included).
You fit the gauge on your horse, as per the included instructions, and whatever colour is shown is the one to install in your saddle.
Besides the gullets, instructions and gauge, the kit also includes 9 screws (2 head screws, 2 T-nut screws and 5 gullet screws).
The case everything comes in is made of heavy duty plastic and I'm sure it'll last for a long time.
Summary: I don't ever see myself needing another gullet set, but I do like Wintec products and will continue to buy them.
Their products are superior and their customer service is excellent - what more could one ask for?
