Purchase: Bought the Corner basket stamped roping saddle in Mandan, ND at Neuen's Tack and Leather for $550, because it looked well-built with a 17" seat for my father.
Also bought a 16" rodeo special roper online being I was impressed with the the first one. Paid $475 on sale from $650 for the 16".
Likes: Both have strong trees and thick leather, and fit our horses well. They've drug very heavy objects, been dallied off of when ponying rank, bucking horses. My 16" has been kicked by a mustang right in the middle of the seat and was still sound.
Dislikes: I had to fix the conchos and screws in the front of the 16" saddle. Also, the leather is strong but bleeds onto your jeans/chaps. I used pure neatsfoot oil to oil them, which could have contributed to the problem.
Quality: The construction on one was better than the other which is typical of factory saddles. My dad's 17" is a better saddle.
Summary: You get what you pay for. When you buy a lower to average-priced factory saddle you take the risk of inconsistency. One is better than the other, but both have lasted 5 years in good condition (with repair to one) and held in there when I needed them too, not bad for the price paid.
