Purchase: Since our horses live in a sandy area, their hooves can get extremely dry in the summer as the moisture seems to get sucked out of them.
A friend recommended Absorbine Hooflex Original Conditioner as a good product to use. She had tried it with some success.
I bought the 400g container for approximately $10.00 Cdn (without taxes). I can't remember exactly from where, though pretty much every tack store sells it.
Likes: The formulation is thick and creamy when it's warm (ie: from being in the barn in the summer), which makes applying it very easy. It soaks into my hoof oil brush and covers the hoof evenly.
It successfully combats dryness in our horses hooves as a result of the sandy conditions they live in.
The smell is pleasant.
Dislikes: Because the mixture has a variety of waxes and oils in it, sand and other debris (ie: pine needles, bits of leaves, etc) tends to stick to it.
This makes the hooves look pretty grungy.
Before I apply hoof oil again (I usually apply it once a day), I wipe off the crud and start fresh.
Quality: Hooflex Original Conditioner comes in plastic tubs (there are 3 sizes to choose from, plus a liquid version in a plastic jar).
I find that the containers hold up well after repeated opening and closing. The containers also have a unique rim which secures the lid, and sometimes it's a little fidgety, but all in all, a good idea.
Summary: A pretty good hoof oil, but I may try something else next time.
I really like how this product moisturizes the hoof, but I'd be interesting in finding a product that doesn't collect yard waste!
