Purchase: For any of you who have seen - or heard - of the equine performance called Cavalia, you'll understand why finding out they have a DVD available is so awesome. It's approximately $27.00 Cdn.
Cavaila is similar to Cirque du Soleil (a famous circus company that uses humans to perform tricks, and has no animals whatsoever) in feel. The co-creator of Cirque is the President and Founder of Cavalia. Both productions have the same general style, though Cavalia uses both human and equine performers. The emphasis is on harmony between the horse and its handler, and a great deal of natural horsemanship is also used.
Likes: Having seen the live Cavalia performance (I was brought to tears because it was so stunning), I was thrilled to get the DVD, available from their website or at shows.
It's broken down into segments (40 mins of performance snippets, 44 mins of behind the scenes, 5 mins on building the big top, 15 on the equine performers and 5 on the human performers).
It also comes with a mini picture book of sorts, along with some beautiful poetry at the bottom of each page to compliment the photos.
Seeing the performance segments was awesome. It's hard to capture the thrill of such a performance on DVD, especially since so many people were wowed with the live show, but they did an excellent job. The soundtrack is also beautiful.
Dislikes: The DVD case isn't plastic.. it's some sort of thick paper / pressed cardboard that will show wear a lot quicker then a plastic case would (ie: scuffs on the edges, etc). A plastic case would've been a better choice in my opinion.
Quality: A great DVD. It comes in a thick paper / pressed cardboard case with gorgeous photography all around, and a description on the back.
The cover has Cavalia stamped on it and raised slightly, which looks really neat. Inside is a mini picture book along with the DVD.
Summary: An awesome DVD. My review didn't do it justice. You've really got to see the live performance to understand how great Cavalia really is, though if you do a search on the internet or get the DVD, you'll begin to understand.
If they come back to my area, I will definitely get tickets again - and more souvenirs!
You can tell that the performers really have a bond with their horses, and care about them, which can be a rarity nowadays. These horses are performers, but they're treated like royalty and you can tell that they enjoy what they do - that means a lot.
