Purchase: I have an older horse that is a little low in the back, although when he is listening, I call it "High Withered"!! He is also very wide so getting a good fit is important for both our safety and comfort. I bought it at a Coastal Farm Store, located in Albany, Oregon. I paid right at $65 for it.
Likes: I am extremely pleased that the pad stays in place. I am a little short and heavy and my horse is tall, round, and doesn't stand extremely well, so mounting with a slick pad is out of the question. This pad stays in place and prevents the saddle from slipping as I make my way up into the seat. It comes in so many nice patterns that I ended up buying two of them because I couldn't make up my mind between two, so I bought them both and my husband uses one too. They are easy to care for.. just wipe the bottom off with a damp cloth and run a brush over the top and it looks like new again. Even on long rides in the wilderness, this pad still looks as nice as the day I bought it. AND it never slipped going up and down some really steep rough terrain.
Dislikes: I really have not found anything about this pad that I don't like. If anything at all, it would be nice if it was less expensive, but I understand that the prices have really increased over the last 50+ years that I have been riding, and like everything else, you get what you pay for and the quality is worth the price.
Quality: The pad has a tacky, waffle, bottom that allows moisture to run off or just evaporate as you are riding and does not absorb into the material part of the pad. The edges are finished off so it doesn't rub the horse anywhere, and it isn't a pad so stiff that it just sits on the horses back. This pad is very nice and I would rate it as a 10+ in quality and workmanship and if I ever wear it out (and I doubt that), I would not hesitate to buy another one just like it.
Summary: At 61, and riding every type of horse equipment around for over 50 years, I am pretty fussy about my tack. This pad fits all my requirements.It's comfortable to both my horse and myself.. the easy care is wonderful.. keeps my horse's back cool even on hot days. Never gets stiff. Never slips even under bad conditions. I would recommend this pad to anyone for any type of riding. It's a good pad and a great value for your money.
