Purchase: I purchased these mittens very recently from the online Stateline Tack catalog for $9.99. The formost reason was having very cold hands while riding in crisp fall weather. I chose mittens because I have always found them to be much warmer than gloves, yet for obvious reasons not suited for riding. These mittens are also very reasonably priced for riding gear and being a college student, this too was very important.
Likes: First of all the mittens fit perfectly, and were so warm in the car when I tried them on that my hands emmediately began sweating. They are soft and comfortable and designed with a separate 'pinky finger' so you can hold english reins properly. I was afraid that despite their leather-like 'grips' along the pinky and across the palm that the reins might slide through them. However, riding my very forward appaloosa out on a lengthy fall hack proved otherwize; VERY NICE grip. I chose the blue gloves over the black ones, and I have to say the color is very appealing.
Dislikes: The cuffs of these gloves are made out of some kind of nylon spandex material that rips very easily (one side tore a small hole when I removed the tag). They also attract dust and dirt like nothing else, being made of fleece. One pat on my horse's neck and they were brown across the palm instead of blue!
Quality: These gloves are made out of a plush polar fleece with wicking action. They have nylon/spandex? cuffs and imitation leather 'grips' across the palm and on either side of the pinky finger. They have a separate 'pinky finger' hole, so you get to look like a ninja turtle, and hold your reins properly.
Summary: These are definately not show gloves, and I imagine an expensive pair of riding gloves would be just as warm and offer more freedom of hand movement. It's definately hard to do barn chores in mittens anyway. But if you have limited funds, like I do and need something very warm for winter riding then these gloves are great. For the money they are an excellent quality mitten. Thin enough to feel delicate pressure on the reins, thick enough to keep you warm.
