Quad Step - mounting block 93-2336R
Barn and Stable Misc

Manufacturer: Dans
Model: Quad Step - mounting block 93-2336R
Category: Barn and Stable Misc

Purchase: I found reference to this mounting block on Jessica Jahiel's website. I had been trying to build the mounting block according to her plans in the back of The Rider's Problem Solver Book. It was February and I was cutting wood for it in the living room. My husband offered this to me as a Valentine's Day gift, if I stop cutting toxic pressure treated wood in the house. I board and have no garage or barn as a woodshop. He paid $182.00 and with shipping to New York State it cost $228.22. The website, it is hard to find on a search engine is:www.horsemansdepot.com/product.aspx?part=93-2336R

Likes: I love the look, the height, the width, and the weight of this mounting block.

Dislikes: It can tip forwards, like any plastic mounting block. It would only happen if you were stretching to reach your horse that was walking away. Now that the weather is good I plan to mount it on a weighted base. My mounting block is constantly being moved around the boarding stable since everyone uses it. I haven't been able to train the other boarders to put it back. My horse loves to jump, so I have to have it outside of the work area or he will try to jump it.

Quality: It may fade in the sun because it is plastic. I got mine in black. I try to keep it in the indoor arena. Everything else about it is high quality.

Summary: This is a fantastic product. I highly recommend it. I wasn't sure what category it best belonged in on this site. I can move it myself while leading my horse (since it keeps getting borrowed, I have to). It has a storage area underneath, which I will use for my helmet when I mount it on a base and make a door for that opening. I was able to easily mark it with my name. I wanted a mounting block to save both of our backs (my horse and I). I had read in an equine medical journal years ago that mounting from the ground can pull the spinous process of your horse's vertebrae to the left side and cause back problems. I was originally taught a common method to mount that is not spine healthy for either of us and have been working to mount more like a gymnist, without using stirrups. My horse is over seventeen hands, though I have been successful on the fifteen hand horse, I haven't made it onto his back with a light vault yet. I was born in the 1960's and had a severe spinal cord injury in 2003 (work related, not horse related). Anything to reduce wear and tear and my daily pain is a plus. When I recently had problems with mounting using a totally treeless saddle I was told by the manufacturer: "With a treed saddle the wooden framework presses into the side of the wither…not nice for the horse. But, with the Ansür we have eliminated the rigidity so just have your upper body weight a bit to the off side and the saddle stays in place. As a side note, one of the local trainers has as a part of his student program, the requirement that each student mount their horse with NO girth on the saddle!!!" I have heard of instructors requiring mounting and riding without a girth. I have been riding almost daily, up to thirty horses in a day on weekends, since 1971 (didn't ride when injured); and wouldn't feel comfortable doing that. I am unimpressed with one and two step mounting blocks. They have only been useful for me to see and brush the top of my horse's back. With this mounting block I just swing my leg over his back without stirrups and settle lightly into the saddle. I did spend months training him my horse to stand quietly next to the mounting block, as mounting is one of the most dangerous riding events. I mount and dismount from both sides, to keep us both even, which was a learning experience. My horse is missing his left eye.
