Purchase: I bought this saddle new from Baker's Harness and Saddlery (http://www.bakerssaddlery.com) in Ontario in October '04. I had just bought a new horse, a very high-withered skinny Thoroughbred mare. I paid $1495 +tx Canadian.
Likes: I love this saddle! It's the only one that can accomodate my mare's high withers. I also wanted a saddle that would fit her when she had gained more weight, and it does!
I am an Eventer, and this is perfect. It has foreward flaps and a semi-deep seat so I can get out of it to jump and sit deep and long in dressage.
Dislikes: My one complaint is the colour. It is a rich Mahogany colour that only Stubben makes, and only in this particular model of the Edelweiss. It scratches easily and I can't scrub it to get the dirt off, so there are little black marks from the stirrup leathers. I oiled it three times and it made it a bit darker, but not much. The colour is beautiful but as an Eventer, I need it to get muddy and come clean!
Also, I had to buy matching stirrup leathers, again, only available by Stubben. But to find a saddle to fit my mare it was worth it!
Quality: Stubben is well known for their saddlery, and this saddle definatly doesn't blemish their reputation! The leather is incredibly soft yet durable, reinforced stitching, suede panels... what's not to love? It still squeaks on occasion, but that should stop with a few more coats of oil! It is also extremely close contact, so I can really squeeze with my knees and half halt!
Summary: I absolutely love this saddle, it's made beautifully and will fit my Thoroughbred no problem. It's perfect for what I do, and I would reccomend it to a jumper too.
