Trail Saddles
Manufacturer: Barefoot Saddles
Model: Cheyenne
Category: Trail Saddles
Purchase: Being a bit stubborn I trained my horse all winter in a treed saddle while contemplating purchasing a saddle that would fit my horse better... I was finally converted to a treeless rider by trying out my riding buddy's Barefoot Cheyenne. The purchase price was around $600.00 but you have to use a special pad that can be purchased for $100.00 to $200.00.
Likes: The comfort, support and communication between rider and horse are unparallel to any other saddle I have tried. The Barefoot Cheyenne saddle is well padded and even after a 30 mile limited distance endurance ride I was not back sore and neither was my horse! I can easily feel when my horse rounds up. He is also much more willing to lengthen his stride something he has never done previously. I have ridden for years in all types of saddle there was really no break in time as the leather is supple and soft to begin with. The twist is narrow enough to be comfortable while simultaneously allowing a clear channel for my rather hard to fit half Arab to have plenty of spinal clearance. The saddle it’s self weighs very little and has enough D rings to attach any equipment needed for long rides. Traditionalist hunters may not like the more dressage look but it was easy to jump in as any other hunt saddle. I have sitting in my tack room many nice saddle that I used to think were very comfortable, now the only time I ride in my circle Y flex tree or my Crosby is when some one else is trying my Barefoot Cheyenne.
Dislikes: Hmm- I wish I could tighten the girth from the saddle. It has a dressage style girth so the saddle fits flat against the horse’s side which is really nice but you either need a buddy to tighten the girth or be willing to hang over and reach for it. (it is possible as long as your horse co-operates!)
The only other drawback is every one wants to borrow this saddle and does not want to give it back once they have tried it!!!
Quality: The nubuck leather is soft and pliant the heavy duty Velcro holds the seat in place nicely. The stirrup bars are large enough to accommodate many different size leathers (even western fenders if so desired.) It is a well constructed saddle with attention paid to the details.
Summary: Bottom line is this is the most comfortable I have been on my horse. I have never really put any thought into my comfort but now that I have I wish I had been able to use this saddle years ago. One other great benefit is that it fits every horse in my barn including my 14.2 hand pony my 15 hand quarter horse and my 16 hand Half Arab. All who have very different body types.
I have tried many more elaborate and expensive saddles the simple elegance of this saddle continues to add to my enjoyment of riding and to my horse's happiness.
