Purchase: I purchased this saddle form the Brockport, NY State Line Tack. Sadly they will soon be out of business on Aug 25th 2007.
Likes: I have a Moriesian mare that is really hard to fit. her back is so flat you could have dinner on it and her barrel round that all saddles slide from side to side. I bought the Thorowgood because of it's inexpensive price. I also have another Thorowgood saddle that's about 10 years old and love it. So I had high hopes for this one. At first it didn't look like it would fit but after actually reading the instructions found you have to ride in it for 20 minutes for the saddle to mold to the horse. Guess what?! It FIT! I love the 4 billet system too. The 2 outside billets gave the saddle the best stability for a really wide horse, less slipping side to side. I didn't need a special girth, I use a Professional's Choice girth with elastic on both ends. Worked great. The micro fiber seat felt very secure and had enough cushion that my rear end was happy.
Dislikes: The 17.5" seat fit my backside well but at 6'2" the flaps didn't fit my long legs. They have velcro blocks but no matter where I put them I couldn't get a comfortable leg position. On my older model I ended up taking them off all together. The micro fiber on the seat collects everything, fuzzies, dust, hair... everything. You will need a saddle cover to store it.
Quality: I've heard most people complain about the rigging for the stirrup leathers. Rest assured, as a long time owner of Thorowgood saddles they do withstand the test of time. Yes, they are shallow and a stirrup leather may fall off when tacking up but that same fault is a feature when you may become parted with your horse. Trust me, I know. Stitching holds up as do the synthetic materials. Easy to clean with a hose and brush but the color does fade after 10 years.
Summary: Over all I like the Maxam. It fits my broadback horse nicely and with a free FISH system it has the potential to fit a wider variety of horses or as your horse chances conditioning. Now if I could just find a saddle that fit the horse AND myself I'd be all set.
