Prix Des Nations
Close Contact Saddles
Manufacturer: Crosby
Model: Prix Des Nations
Category: Close Contact Saddles
Purchase: I bought this saddle on ebay, it was used only five times and looked new. I had been researching what type of saddle to buy for a long time, and I had ridden in a crosby for years that I loved. The saddle I found is a cutback 17 in. Prix Des Nations spring seat medium tree. I wanted a saddle that would be versatile to fit many horses, as I ride a number of different horses. The saddle is originally around $900, and I paid $230 for it (including shipping). It came without stirrups or irons, so in total I paid about $300 ($300 was my limit).
Likes: I love this saddle because it has fit every horse I've put it on, except for a very high withered thoroughbred. Otherwise I have ridden wide Quarter horses as well as narrow ones, ponies, paints, Thoroughbreds, and a Perchern/Standardbred mare in it. This saddle is very versatile as well as comfortable. Mine has no knee rolls or blocks, and I love how much I can feel the horse beneath me. When I first got the saddle it was orange colored, but after oiling it it has turned a rich dark brown. I was lucky to find stirrup leathers that were also orange-ish and so I oiled them at the same time and they match perfectly.
Dislikes: The only thing I can say that is bad about this saddle is the seat is pretty hard. I'm used to riding in old schooling saddles so to me it is a relief, but to my friends it's hard. It also has a pretty flat seat, which I like, but most do not.
Quality: The saddle is constructed well, but I don't know much about saddle construction. The quality is amazing, very nice leather that is extremely soft and supple after oiling it only twice. There are no tears or rips in the leather, and I've dropped the saddle once in my garage and it's been banged around in my trunk before. It's a very sturdy saddle.
Summary: I love this saddle and recommend it to anyone who rides more than one horse and wants a saddle that will be comfortable on any of them. I also love Crosbys and highly recommend any make by them.
