Purchase: I have two horses on small acreage and limited options for manure management. I did a search for fly control and wanted a natural way to control the population due to my mare being in foal, along with other reasons. The Arbico site provides comprehensive information about how the predators worked, when to begin using them and how to distributed them. They also discussed manure management practices. The predators only work on the fly pupae, not the adult flies. I already had adult flies so I began the predators right away, following the directions and distributing them in the evening. I distributed the predators every two weeks for the first six weeks to kill the pupae since I already had a ton of adult flies and was pretty sure I had many more on the way. I knew the predators wouldn't kill the adult flies, so I put together a large fly "sticky net" of my own design using the fly strips to deal with the adult flies and then began a composting manure management program. Six weeks later, I literally have seen a total of two flies and since I have very close neighbors who have six horses, several sheep and goats, chickens and, yes, two bison and a water buffalo, and who do not practice any kind of fly control at all, I can attribute the lack of flies on my horses to the fly predators, without a doubt. I pay less than $20.00 a shipment (about the same as a good fly spray costs and it last a lot less longer) and could not be more pleased. My horses and happy and comfortable and so am I. The predators worked so well, I started looking into other products from Arbico to deal with the mosquitoes and tried a garlic based product along with granules and have had fantastic success with that as well. I think the trick to the fly predators is keeping up the program at least every three weeks and realizing that you have to deal with the adult flies that have already arrived before you will see results from the predators. I love the predators and will use them, along with the mosquito regime for the rest of my life. I have had such good results, it is actually a joy to be outside at dusk and in the evening, and there is no stomping or tail swishing to deal with when grooming, tacking or bathing my horses. The predators are unbeatable and very inexpensive. I still use sprays and masks for trail riding, but on my property riding in the ring, working in the round pen or just grooming or playing with my horses, I don't need a thing and I have yet to see my horses stomping their feet or swishing their tail while lazily grazing. I would highly recommend the predators, as well as mosquito management, and suggest you follow through with the program as it is intended and you will have such good results, you will forget that flies ever were a problem.
Likes: I like most that the product actually works when the directions are followed, also that the product is all natural, you have no worries about its long term effect of using pesticides around or on your horses (Especially your pregnant mares) and your dogs or any other animals, including birds which are a natural insect control in itself and the predators only kill the fly pupae and don't bother anything else, including humans. I love how affordable it is and also the company's great customer support staff that will take the time to listen to your entire situation, steer you in the right direction and helpful is explaining exactly how and when to distribute the predators.
Dislikes: There is absolutely nothing I don't like about this company and their products.
Quality: They come exactly as described, in a paper bag, and you may have to wait a few days before you see that they are beginning to hatch. It can be difficult the very first time to realize they are starting to hatch because they are so small and hard to see thru the bag "window", but when I saw a couple on the outside of the bag I knew they were ready. After the first shipment, I knew what to look for and could tell when the time was right to release them. They work just as described and are extremely effective.
Summary: This is a perfect solution to fly control and I will use this product for the rest of my life. I highly recommend them.
