Deep Seat Jumping Saddle
Jumping Saddles

Manufacturer: Antares
Model: Deep Seat Jumping Saddle
Category: Jumping Saddles

Purchase: For the past 10 years I have ridden in an older model Hermes Steinkraus (Flat seat, no knee rolls/blocks)-and my horse who has a very powerful jump with a huge bascule- was jumping me out of the saddle at 3'. I recently bought my Antares used from a girl in my barn who had outgrown the saddle. She bought the saddle a year ago as a demo for $2900 and I bought it from her for $2300. This custom saddle retails new for $3500. Since it's only 2 1/2 years old & in excellent condition, I think I got a pretty good deal.

Likes: I love the buttery soft leather and cushy seat. The knee and thigh blocks keep my leg secure over larger fences even with my horse's big jump. My saddle has a medium tree with foam panels and a shorter more forward flap. It also has a super-deep seat; it's great for the jumper ring. Because of the way the saddle is made, I noticed that the horses I ride are much more responsive to my seat. This saddle also fits a wide range of horses- I had problems finding a Butet or Devocoux that would work with many different sized horses.

Dislikes: My saddle is grain leather with calf-skin knee rolls. I think the next Antares I buy will be made completely out of calf-skin. The grain leather tends to pick up dirt more easily but is still supple and "grippy" and I wouldn't trade it for the price.

Quality: The leather is top quality french leather, very supple with excellent grip. When purchased new each saddle is custom made for the horse and rider. The stitching is tight and even and the leather is easy to care for and easy to break in. I know some people who have these saddles and they complain that the leather scratches easily. Any scratches or scuffs I've found on my saddle have rubbed out with a thorough cleaning.

Summary: I plan on riding in this particular saddle for many years to come. If ever I buy a horse that this saddle does not fit I would gladly spend the money on a second Antares; they are well worth the investment!
