Purchase: I first saw these fleece breeches at a booth at the Rocky Mountain Horse Expo in Grand Junction, Colorado. The suppleness of the deer leather and coziness of these fleece lined breeches immediately impressed me. I was weary of bulky layers under traditional schooling tights (just try going to the restroom in a hurry with all of those thick layers to manipulate!) and still experiencing a freezing fanny and thighs. I kept wishing my Patagonia fleece hiking tights had knee patches. Tropical Rider's Toasties were the answer. I purchased my knee patch Toasties from Tropical Rider's web site (www.tropicalrider.com) for $89.00 plus shipping. The site was easy to use and I received my Toasties in less than a week.
Likes: I love the wind/water resistant outer layer that also repeals dirt and hay. Yesterday I wore my Toasties to ride, longe, groom, muck the corral, feed our horses and clean and refill the water trough. My breeches still looked great when I was done. I also appreciate the versitility of these breeches. They were as cozy and comfortable when the temperature was in the mid-40s as when the temperature dropped 15 degrees, the wind picked up and it began to snow. Because I spend hours outside at a time in the winter, I really value clothing that keeps me warm and dry. When the weather gets really wicked, I'll layer a pair of silk underwear with my Toasties. I'm confident this will keep me warm when the weather is below freezing and it's windy and snowing.
Dislikes: I generally wear a size 8 so I ordered a medium. They're a little big, which is okay because I want to be able to add a thin layer and just hate breeches that bind at the knees. However, the regular length is a little long (I wear a 29 inseam) and they tend to bunch up at the ankles. This did not present a problem in terms of riding or comfort, however.
Quality: These fleece breeches are more like tights. They're well made and extremely comfortable. As I stated earlier, the exterior material repeals dirt, water and hay and the interior fleece is really cozy and comfortable. The deer leather knee patches are sumptuous. Overall, the Toasties are a very well-made product.
Summary: Although $95 (including shipping) is not an insignificant amount of money for those of us on a limited budget, Tropical Rider's Toasties are worth it. They breath well enough to be functional in warmer temperatures but are wonderfully warm when it gets cold. I hope to splurge at some point and purchase a pair of the extended knee patch Toasties. I highly recommend this product.
