Manufacturer: Tucker (View all products by Tucker)
Model: High Plains (View all High Plains reviews)
Category: Trail Saddles
Purchase: Bought over the internet and paid $1400.
Likes: Looked like it fit Gaited Horses well with high gullet clearance and additional rock to the bars to accommodate the saddle pocket of a gaited horse. The front was opened up to allow shoulder movement of a big going gaited horse that had plenty of front leg movement. The Swell was 14 inches and especially liked the 5 inch cantle for riding colts and mountain use.
Dislikes: The seat rise was too extreme and caused severe discomfort for men and women alike. The "Gel Seat" narrowed down to a high ridge in the front and after a few minutes of riding the saddle it became not just uncomfortable but painful. Called Tucker and they were not accommodating.
Quality: Not very well constructed. Single ply skirting Leathers, rigging, and stirrup leathers are very light. Tucker now puts a disclaimer tag on the rigging that states the saddle is meant for pleasure trail riding only which means it is not meant for serious daily trail riders with pack mules or even daily use. I would not want to take this saddle into the mountains for a 3 week pack saddle ride. It is not durable enough for that kind of use. My husband is 6' 2" and over 200 lbs. This saddle would not be a safe saddle for him.
Summary: The stirrup leathers are placed too far forward for safety and comfort. Some riders lean back when riding pacey horses and it appears Tucker's design is to accommodate this type of rider. While the tree fits our gaited horses, the saddle does not fit our needs. We replaced the Tucker with a Crates Gaited horse saddle and we really like it. The Crates is very well constructed and fits horse and rider well - for less money.
