Just wanted to let you know about my experience with my Old Mac boots. I made a decision to pull my horse's shoes 9 weeks ago and currently transitioning to barefoot. Trailered my horse to Carroll County (MD., USA) Tack last Friday (one week ago) and got my horse fitted into a size 5 pair of Old Macs (for front hooves only) cost = $145.00 plus tax, by Brandon (owner's son) who was extremely helpful and very courteous. Have used the boots about 4 times during the past week and my horse has developed very bad chafing behind his left foot and slight chafing behind his right foot. Called and spoke to Brandon at Carroll County Tack who told me that he had never heard of any chafing problems in the back of the foot only in the front. Either I am not putting these boots on correctly, using them for too long a period of time, or they are grossly overrated or a combination of the three ...
This morning during a gallop my horse actually was able to get his right (front) boot off (so I am pretty sure that I didn't have that one on properly) .... We went back to find it (which we did) and then I took off the left boot (the side of the bad chafing) and kept the boots off and went back to barefoot riding.
