Model: Classic Half Chap
Category: English Chaps/Boots/Helmets
Purchase: The chaps were a gift, but the price for them seems to run around $90 - $100. I had specifically requested these chaps as a gift, because of Ariat's reputation for quality. I was tired of cheap-o half chaps (which are sometimes as or more expensive than Ariats!) which would only last me a few months before totally falling to pieces.
Likes: The chaps have a very classic look, and when worn with the same color paddock boots are sometimes mistaken for tall boots. They are made of very durable materials (compared to other half chaps, anyways). I really like that they look so "professional", and not as ugly, gaudy, or "cheap" looking as a lot of half chaps. Also, the fit is phenomenal; Ariat is really the way to go for hard-to-size people, and they really do their research on making their products ergonomic.
Dislikes: I had to return the first pair I ordered because the zipper on one absolutely wouldn't work (although there were no obvious problems with the zipper... it just wouldn't work!). On the new pair I got, the zipper is still somewhat difficult, and my family and I have had many Ariat paddock boot zippers just up and break on us. I don't like the quality of their zippers, and I think it's totally out of line with Ariat's usual standard of quality. Also, the zippers zip DOWN, which is a little awkward, especially if the chaps are tight or not broken in yet (stiff). The suede on the inside of the chaps, which is meant to improve grip, wears off quickly, and therefore soon does nothing for the chaps.
Quality: Excellent quality, as is typical of Ariat products except, as mentioned, the zippers and suede. Nonetheless, overall they are the best quality half chaps I've encountered. I ride a lot, and I go through half chaps like socks, but these have held up longer (and better) than any other chaps I've ever had.
Summary: Ariat half chaps (and the Classics in particular) are unbeatable in quality, fit, and look. Despite some minor issues, I have yet to encounter a brand of half chaps which can stand up to them (although admittedly I haven't tried any super-super expensive chaps). I would recommend them to anyone.
