Manufacturer: Stubben
Model: Siegfreid CS 94
Category: Close Contact Saddles
Purchase: Acquired on e-bay for $775. Purchased because my friends swore by their Stubbens longevity and comfort. Also liked the nifty two-tiered flap design and thigh blocks. Price was less than 50% of new and the saddle was a 2000 model.
Likes: The security! Wow, here I thought my Crosby PDN (with padded knee flaps) was comfy and secure- well when I took them both cantering cross country back to back the Stubben was a clear winner! It puts my legs in tight so they don't move cantering up-hill, around turns etc... I could really move with my horse. The Crosby left me fighting for stability. The Stubben is awesome for jumping as well- the thigh blocks don't interfere as some knee blocks will but they are there when you need them! This is my 'sport saddle'. It fits my 15.1 s-bred and my 16.1 draft cross (it is 32 cm). Love the wool flocking which can be re-stuffed to suit your horses back.
Dislikes: It is very sturdy and I purchased already well broken in- don't know that it would have been a fun saddle to break in! Also, Stubben really needs to follow the trend and put more padding in the seat! While this one has a decent amount I found it hard after a few hours on trail- bought a cashel tush- cushion which really helps but would be nice to not rely on that! Note that I am VERY picky about the comfort of my saddles!
Quality: This was a trainers saddle I purchased used- it had some scratches on the metal symbol plates under the stirrup flap- assuming this is from attachments rubbing. Also, the 2 large stitches at the upper front of the flap are a little loose on the mounting side- seems due to stress when it is lifted to tighten the girth. No big deal, the saddle is really built well, very nice leather, not too soft that it scratches easily but quite pliable.
Summary: As stated this is my 'cross-country', jumping saddle. I have a County Eventer I prefer for CTR rides or longer trail rides. I won't be getting rid of this saddle anytime soon- love the way it fits my horses and myself. Would buy it again as I tried tons of saddles and this one stood out for having wonderful close contact feeling of the horse and leg position for the rider.
