Purchase: I go to Montana for a month every summer and when I returned one of my Anglo Arabs leg guards was in tatters. I had just received a coupon in the mail from Stagecoach West for 15% off so I went there. The catalogs I had at home sold them for about $56.95 for four. I purchased two pairs, a quiet ride fly mask with ears, a reduced Charles de Kunffy book and a reduced Jane Kidd book and my total was $99.92. (I have three vices, horses, chocolate and books). (These coupons really work for them). The address is Route 5 & 20 in Irving New York 14081,phone is 1-800-648-1121 or 716-934-4771 and they have a website www.stagecoachwest.com. The leg guards were marked $24.95 a pair.
Likes: I reviewed the old leg guards on this web site, these are a new style. They have made some changes.
For one thing they come in three sizes: horse, warmblood and miniature. I have an Anglo Arab who is 15.3 and narrow about 800 lbs. This new style fit him with less overlap which should be more comfortable and they cover from knee to fetlock (old style went over his hoof more and sagged a bit below his knee as they aged).
The new style has a vertical stay in the back seam so they can be velcroed looser and stay up fine; the catalog said the stay is plastic.
The new style has velcro fittings like the old style but without the elastic and the free ends of the straps are hemmed. They have the same color as before and the same fitted shape.
Dislikes: Once again the warmblood style is too small for my other horse a 17.2 HH Clydesdale Standardbred cross gelding. He can be dangerous when striking at flies in close quarters as he lost an eye. I use fly spray which I also reviewed here. I have tried to put his striking to good use by putting it on cue to try to control it, but after a fly lands he just can't help himself. He has a belly guard and fly rug with neck guard.
I wish the strap at the fetlock joint still had the elastic (rest of straps are fine) as the Anglo Arab is old with Arthritis and I think it would be more comfortable.
Quality: The construction is fantastic, they should last me for a few years with daily use. The design was rated number 1 in Horse Journal and in John Lyons Perfect Horse. I noticed other companies are copying the contour leg design. They aren't too hot and they rarely get snags in a pasture that has some hazards like burrs and brush. I have had few burrs get on them and then only on the parts that are worn from years of use.
Summary: I like the new design better than the older design. I had to trim the straps on the old style, they sagged a little as they aged and the fit wasn't as perfect.
I have kept my old ones for days when I am cleaning the new ones. I think the old one in tatters wasn't properly applied and slipped down and was walked on before it was discovered. No marks on his leg though. It is repairable to be functional but the bottom edge was more like fringe so I tossed it.
