Purchase: I purchased this article directly from the manufacturer through their website. It costs about $50 including shipping, and I purchased the smaller size (weanling).
Likes: This is the humane way to wean babies. I did not have a separate place to put my baby and I hate the anxiety of weaning. When I bought my broodmare, the old owners told me that they would wean baby before I picked her up. They waited until I loaded her in the trailer and drove off, and that was when she weaned her baby. She spent the whole ride home throwing a fit in the trailer, and I was afraid she would get hurt. Thankfully she was alright, but I did not want something similar happening again. This device allows mom and baby to stay together and allows mom to wean baby more naturally than abrupt cessation of nursing. It is great for small spaces.
Dislikes: Unfortunately, this product did not work for my mare and foal. Mom went lame, so she went on stall rest (without baby) for a month. Once she went back out, baby wore the weaning strap because mom wasn't dry, yet. Baby wore the strap for three months and was still nursing off of mom. I finally gave up and weaned baby the normal way; by this time he was quite old. The manufacturers state that this takes up to 8 weeks to work, so it is a big commitment. And if it stays on too long, it starts to rub baby raw on the bridge of his nose. It also slipped a lot.
Quality: The EZEE WEAN is made out of durable nylon outer with an inner brace of heavy wire and several polypropylene blunt prings, which protrude from both the underside and the top of the unit to discourage nursing. Despite several months of continual wear, the velcro held up wonderfully and even after I gave up on it, it looked new other than the dirt. The materials are durable and rugged.
Summary: I would be hesitant to recommend this to anyone else, after having tried it myself. This device may work better on some mares than others; perhaps because my mare has a big udder, because she loves her babies more than any more I've met, because baby was persistent and because she was supposed to be weaning baby number 9 she might have not been as typical as perhaps a maiden mare or a mare who doesn't spend every moment gazing adoringly at her offspring. On the plus side, it is durable and will probably last several seasons, but while it may be the safer way to wean it is also much more expensive and takes longer.
