Manufacturer: Professional's Choice
Model: Sports Medicine Boots II
Category: Horse Boots and Wraps
Purchase: I purchased these directly from Professional's Choice in 2000. I had two twenty dollar gift certificates and bought a color that they no longer produced and was discounted, so when all was said and done I only paid about $25 for the boots.
Likes: I like the neoprene. While some horses may be allergic, mine are not and it keeps the form and shape quite well. They also offer a lot of support. I do not usually use these for riding, but rather for my gelding who had EPM and has ataxia that sometimes causes him laminitis. I also like the strap that goes under the fetlock, as this holds the boot in place quite well.
Dislikes: I was dissapointed that when it came right down to the generic brand verses my Professional's Choice products, the velcro on my generics as well as the construction of the generics outperformed Professional's Choice. The neoprene on my Pro Choice boots actually tore, so I lost the flap that goes under the fetlock (it tore in my hand, so it was not abuse; it simply gave out). The velcro is not as sticky as the generics, which makes it easier to get them off but I don't consider that a good thing. Although I paid roughly the same amount for the Pro Choice boots and the generics, my generics have lasted significantly longer and when priced at retail, cost significantly less. Because I do not use these for riding and they are only used when my gelding has laminitis or is leaning badly and appears like he might be more prone to it, they do not have everyday useage like a competitor's SMB's might have, and they would probably not have lasted very long had I used them daily.
Quality: These boots are neoprene with velcro closures. They use a high-quality and durable neoprene which maintains the shape of the leg.
Summary: While I don't regret my own decision in buying these, since they did not cost me much, I would not buy them in the future. They may be a name brand, but they did not hold up as expected. In the future I will stick with my generic brand boots, as they are cheaper to replace and have outlasted the professional's choice boots.
