Horse Health and Well Being
Model: Su-Per Wind
Category: Horse Health and Well Being
Purchase: This is available from KV Vet and Allivet for approximately $10 for 16 ounces. I purchased this for my two horses that acquired heaves before I bought them as a means of bronchodialation and relief on especially humid or dusty days.
Likes: Used in conjunction with other positive methods, this stuff works well on hot and dusty days for horses with heaves. It is not a cure-all and should not be used alone, but rather with other prescribed methods of dust control, such as watering down dusty areas, keeping horses at pasture, and taking them completely off hay or hay cubes, feeding only watered down complete or senior feeds. Because I followed this procedure and used Su-Per wind on especially bad days, I could ride my horses for several hours a day every day until the one died of a heart attack at 28 and until the other came down with EPM at 22. After four or five years of good management practices, I was able to discontinue the use of the product and continued to ride my horses for several more years. Because my gelding is no longer in shape and has more trouble breathing, I have gone back to using it on bad days and it does wonders for him.
Dislikes: Once the bottle is half empty, it becomes difficult to draw out the fluid and I need to pour it into a tupperware container to store it and draw it out. I also don't like that they use electrical tape to seal the bottles (although that might just be KVVET that does that), because electrical tape is a carcinogen.
Quality: This comes with its own applicator, so you do not need to buy a syringe separately. The product is now made of honey rather than molasses as the sweetener, so it is not as thick as it used to be, making it easier to draw up. It is quite sticky if you get it on your hands.
Summary: Excellent for horses with allergies or heaves as part of a well-rounded management practice, but NOT a cure-all! I would not recommend it to anyone who is not willing to take their horses off of hay because those who I have known who were not willing to change their management practices have had it help their horses for a few months but then their horses just went downhill, because they were not doing anything to manage their horse's condition. This is similar to cough syrup and is a bandaid more than a prevention measure or cure, but just as cough syrup does when you have a cough, it does not cure the disease but helps control symptoms.
