Purchase: This was purchased for roughly $50 at a local tack store. I was a therapeutic riding instructor at the time and bought these for a young boy with developmental delays.
Likes: The colors make it easy to train young riders where to position their hands on the reins. It is much easier for them to understand that when you ride Casey you need to have your hands in the middle of the red than trying to work out the feel of the animal's mouth, especially if you are dealing with young children or disabled children who have no concept or ability to feel.
Dislikes: The reins are very stiff until they have been used a oiled for several years. Because they are rubber, they are quite hard. They are also not easy to get on and off and we put clips on the end. While I feel that for regular reins this is acceptable, I do not feel that it is acceptable for reins like this that are used often for children or the disabled and will need to come on and off very regularly.
Quality: Leather base with four colored rubber parts each spaced about 8 inches apart. Good quality, but stiff.
Summary: An excellent schooling rein, but buy used if you won't be able to break them in fast (the place I used to work had 15-20 disabled kids a day plus another 15-20 typical youth, so it was reasonable to break in a new pair of reins). If you are going to have them for home or private use or just very moderate use, try to see if you can't locate a used pair first, as they are durable enough to last for years and years but they take quite a bit of use to break in.
