Model: Cordura Trail Saddle
Category: Trail Saddles
Purchase: My mother purchased this at the Minnesota Horse Expo in 1999 for $225. Because she occasionally rides my horses, she needed her own saddle to fit on my aged mare.
Likes: This is a lightweight, easily portable and liftable saddle. My mother, who is only 5 feet tall and who has rheumatoid arthritis, can handle this saddle by herself, even when it means tacking up a 16 hand mare. It is easy to clean and it is well padded. It comes in a variety of colors; my mother got purple and black! It comes complete with all fittings except for the cinch. It is a comfortable ride and is a great trail or spare saddle. It also is quite flexible so fits well on most of our horses; we have used it on thoroughbreds and stock horses alike.
Dislikes: The latigo lace, like the rest of the saddle, is synthetic. This means that if you can't fit the cinch into one of the holes on the latigo lace, it is difficult to keep tight and often slips. However, this is relatively cheap to replace and apart from the latigo strap, it makes a good saddle.
Quality: This is a cordura synthetic saddle. The bottom is fleece lined and there is synthetic suede on the saddle seat. The stirrups are a hard plastic, although they are quite durable. It has held up through much use and abuse, and is easy to care for. Being synthetic means that it requires little maintenance beyond a good dusting now and again if it is not used frequently enough.
Summary: Purchase this saddle because it is lightweight and comfortable and use it for training horses to accept the saddle, for trail riding, or for kids or people who can't lift too much. But buy a new latigo strap that either has more holes in it or is not as slick. The saddle was well worth the $225, even without the fittings.
Usefulness Rating: 2.5 out of 5.
