Purchase: I purchased this set of nippers from Country Supply in 2006 to have around the barn for emergencies and light trimming. They cost about $40.
Likes: This is a mid-grade hoof nipper. I like that it is rather inexpensive but is still easy to use. It is fairly lightweight and even I can handle it and use it, even on young horses who are still not used to trimming. It is small enough for a woman's hands (but comes in bigger sizes) and does an excellent job cutting.
Dislikes: This is probably not a professional tool, at least not in the size I ordered. I use it only lightly and I don't know how it would hold up in daily use, although I have heard of farriers who actually use it as their standard nipper. But I have no problems with it at all.
Quality: Mid-grade (the cheap ones run about $10 and the nice ones are about $150). Perfect for the backyard owner or barn/stable owner, because it is relatively lightweight and easy to use. It comes in several sizes and ranges in price from about $40-$80 depending on the size. Mine has gotten a bit rusty, but perhaps because it is not used often.
Summary: The best tool for the money if you're looking for something to have around the barn for emergencies. Cuts easily, even if you're a skinny little woman like me.
