Big Horn Saddlery
Tuffy Swayback Pad
Western Saddle Fittings/Pads

Manufacturer: Big Horn Saddlery
Model: Tuffy Swayback Pad
Category: Western Saddle Fittings/Pads

Purchase: I purchased this through an online tack dealer about five years ago for use on two of my older horses, both of whom are sways. It cost about $85 new.

Likes: It is really designed for swayback horses, so the ends are tapered and there is a buildup in the middle of the saddle. My oldest mare, who was in her late twenties, had had decided never to be ridden again in a saddle because I was afraid that with her sway the saddle would hurt her, no matter how well padded it was. The girl who leased my swaybacked gelding bought one for him, and it worked wonders for comfort for my animals, so I bought another. A couple of years ago, I picked up a 12 year old mare with a bad sway at an auction, so I am still able to use it on her. It is durable and strong. Mine still looks new!

Dislikes: The price is inhibiting for some people, which is too bad because it really helps sore backs. Also, I disliked how most places you order it they are only available in "assorted colors," meaning the suppliers get to choose, which is acceptable on a $1 hoof pick (which I usually get my color choice on) but seems a little lame for a $85 saddle pad. And it is not available in solid colors, only navajo. I wish they made one for English!

Quality: Product description: Made with 1/2" mixed fiber center and 1 1/2" foam insert that tapers to 1/2" on each end. Cutaway at withers for better fit on high withered horse. Insert is cut out for close contact at leg area. Center of pad is anatomically curved to provide spine relief. Leather wear leathers. 30" x 32". This is a durable and high quality product and would buy it again if I needed more than one at a time!

Summary: A must-have for anyone with a swaybacked western horse, for his comfort and safety! You will notice an improvement in his character and movement right away in this pad, as he will be less sore and have a more even distribution across his back. Much cheaper than specifically fitting a saddle to him! Exceptional concept; just wish they also made and English version!
