Purchase: I purchased these at the local tack store for $45 each. I have a gelding with sensitive feet and was hoping to find a way to protect his feet without adding to the detriment of the structure of his foot by pounding in nails or adding to the detriment of his joints by putting on metal shoes. I also used them on my stallion when he got thrush, and on my friend's gelding when he got a hoof abcess.
Likes: These are nice rubber shoes that are not impossible to get on or off with a little work. They are made to protect the foot, and are rubber, which has less of an impact on the joints than metal plates on your foot (because I was always confused about how a metal plate on the bottom of your foot could cushion the foot or lessen the impact).
Dislikes: They didn't stay on very well. They were very slippery, so I could only make very gradual turns and I couldn't go fast, especially not on grass. I couldn't find any to fit my gelding's front feet (because he normally wears a 2 wide shoe) and the ones on his back feet twisted sideways when we rode. My stallion's also twisted. It seemed that they fit fine on my friend's arabian gelding; she borrowed them from me for about three weeks and wasn't readjusting them too often on him, even though he had them on all day.
Quality: Heavy rubber boot with a metal clasp that draws in metal cords to tighten the boot to a correct fit. They seem durable, but did not fit my thoroughbred gelding or my quarter horse stallion very well. I purchased several different sizes trying to find a good fit and never did find good shoes for either of them.
Summary: It seems like they work on some horses, and I have heard good thing with them on arabs beyond my friend's gelding. They are a great concept, but are rather expensive if the policy at your local tack store is that things must be returned in unused condition and you can't find ones that fit. They are inexpensive for a rubber boot, which may be why I had trouble fitting my horses.
