Fly Control

Manufacturer: Farnam
Model: Equi-Spot
Category: Fly Control

Purchase: I bought these at Fleet Farm for a pack of three for $10 or so. They are supposed to last about 2-3 weeks each. I thought I'd try this form of fly control when it was popular a few years back.

Likes: It is easy to apply and actually does a fairly decent job. Admittedly, after a few days I was spraying again, but not nearly as often or as much, and more on areas that hadn't been applied with the spot-on liquid, like the belly and the barrel and face.

Dislikes: They give you enough for an average sized horse, and I own thoroughbreds. My average horse needs one a half of these. I can use up half of it just doing the mane area, the other half going down the back, and have nothing left for the legs. The flow is not regulated at all except by your hand, so it can pour out in a big puddle if you're not careful.

Quality: For best results, this product needs to be applied on clipped horses. It works decently well, and I have seen a difference when I put it on some horses and not others as to who has more flies. But because there is no way to really control the flow, you can end up applying too much in some areas and not enough in others. I think a quick-absorbing gel might be more effective than a liquid. This is oil-based, so it stays on for quite some time. I usually reapplied every few weeks.

Summary: I do recommend this as it does help with bugs. It is not an end-all to your fly problems (I think only winter does that), but it does reduce their presence on horses. You may need to get a couple packs if you own bigger horses, like I do, or decide where the flies affect them the most before putting it on so you know you'll have enough for those areas.
