Purchase: My friend's mom bought these for her when she was 13 and in riding lessons. She quit riding and gave them to me when I was about 23. They run about $40-50. She bought them locally.
Likes: Now in their second decade of use, these are holding up fairly well. They are easy to wash and put on and take off, because they have four velcro closures rather than a zipper. They don't pinch and are looser than other half chaps I have tried.
Dislikes: It is true these are old and have been used quite a bit, but some of the stitching on the leather is coming off of the velcro. They still stay on fine, but I would have preferred something a bit more durable, even if they have been used a lot. Also, the elastic foot strap is becoming rather stretched out and loose, though that is more to be expected at that age.
Quality: These are a lighter weight suede. They are dark green in color with four velcro fasteners. They have a calf guard. As I mentioned, the leather is starting to come off the velcro on the fasteners of one and the elastic is essentially worthless. However, they do stay up (and down!) just fine despite the elastic being useless.
Summary: These were free for me and I still use them more often than my new half chaps (which have a zipper, which I find pinches me!). I will probably continue to use them until they fall apart. Admittedly, they aren't too bad if you can find them for cheap; much better than their breech, although about the same as far as quality (the design is better and the sizes are truer). I would probably continue to shop around if I was going to spend $50 for half chaps, but for $25 or less, they are worthwhile, even used.
