Likes: I wanted a thick cushy pad for my poor, old, swaybacked horse. This pad is WONDERFUL!! It balances the saddle without adding bulk under your legs. It is soft, flexible(unlike those cardboard wither relief pads), LIGHTWEIGHT (unlike gel). It is designed to go right on the horses back, it wicks moisture, allows air circulation. Hospital grade sheepskin (not spun wool) cushions pressure points.
Dislikes: I tried a thin pad under this (trying to keep it cleaner), and the other pad creeped right out from under the saddle. It is best to use it alone (you don't need anything else)
Quality: Beautiful, THICK, real sheepskin attached to an elegant, quilted cotton top. Two velcro billet straps. The topline is contoured for comfort. The channel above the spine is free of sheepskin from front to back- no pressure on the spine. It conforms to the horses back naturally. And is it washable!! (NO DRYER) The sheepskin fluffs up again easilly.
Summary: The Mattes pad really makes my horse more comfortable. I really like how well it is designed. I ride easier knowing I've done everything I can for him.
