Barrel Saddles
Manufacturer: Royal King
Model: Premium Barrel Saddle
Category: Barrel Saddles
Purchase: I found this saddle slightly used at a tack swap. Had never seen or heard of one before but it looked like the style seat I look for but is so hard to find.
Likes: The seat on this saddle is exactly what you need for good equitation. The seat puts you OVER your legs, not behind them as do almost ALL barrel saddles on the market. It also has a narrow twist so you don't feel like you're riding a 55 gal drum. I can't get over how much I like this saddle. It's SO comfortable and it really keep you in place. Everyone who tries it likes it, as well. And the tree... I never thought that I would be able to find a barrel saddle with flared forks (like a Wade tree), until I stumbled onto this saddle. It fits my horses so well! High withers or low. The best part about the saddle is that brand new, it's under $700. Usually under $600. OH, one more nice thing about is that I found that they're made in Indiana. NOT in China.
Dislikes: The stirrup leathers are a little too robust which makes it hard to adjust the stirrup height. I spoke with the people who make it and, even though I bought it used, they'll back up their workmanship. It may not be covered with sterling silver but I'm thrilled with this saddle. Going to get another one.
Quality: It looks like this saddle may be constructed slightly crooked but it seems to ride fine. The manufacturers want me to send it to them but I'm having trouble parting with it. Maybe I'll send it in January.
Summary: I thought, in order to get a saddle with a Wade-type tree (flared forks) and a centered seat, I'd have to spend a few thousand on a Ammerman or Chaves. I've sat in an Ammerman since I found this Royal king and I've got to say, if they were priced the same, I'd still take the Royal King without hesitation. Your barrel horse is running his heart out for you. Be kind in return and get rid of your saddles without flared forks. They're hurting your horses! I know it sounds like an ad for Royal King but I don't have any connection to them at all.
