Purchase: After purchasing my first gaited horse, I quickly learned that my old quarter horse tack would not work so I went in pursuit of purchasing "the perfect saddle". I was so excited about the thought of a brand new saddle and I couldn't wait to take my new horse down the trail so I trotted on down to a local retailer who had gaited saddles in stock. I even took my horse there to ensure I would be getting the right fit (since I was new to gaited horses). I found a saddle I liked and so they fitted it on my horse. They assured me that this saddle was a perfect fit. I figured that they were the experts so I purchased it and left with a smile on my face reaching from ear to ear. I couldn't wait to put my new saddle on my new horse and go for that ultimate ride. Unfortunately that smile quickly turned to a grimace and frustrating disappointment as I found my horse humping his back in response to the new $1300 saddle. After adjusting saddle positions and saddle pads several times with no improvement, I resigned myself to the fact that this saddle wasn't going work so I decided to continue my pursuit for the "perfect" gaited saddle. I thought that maybe a custom made saddle was the answer so I looked at several companies online. I narrowed the search down to two companies and had each send their sample trees or fit forms so I could get a customized fit. While one company sent a single rigid tree, Dixieland sent a half dozen fit forms to try so they could make the best assessment and offer a true custom fit. Cynthia Wright of Dixieland Gaited Saddles did just that. She reviewed the digital photos I sent her of the various fit forms and quickly came up with a recommendation. She pointed out why she chose one over the others to help me understand the saddle fit as well. So on May 30, 2007 I placed my order for a custom made saddle. The total price for the saddle was around $1100 and that included many, many upgrades! I was thrilled as that was less than I had paid for the first saddle purchased at the local retailer and it wasn't half as nice and certainly not custom made!
Likes: What is not to like with the Dixieland Gaited Saddle? The Amish craftsmanship is incredible. You get to pick out all the specifics including type and amount of tooling, skirt style, stirrups, leather color, suede or slick leather seats, amount of padding and silver to name a few. They even lowered the rise of the saddle for a custom fit for me and reduced the length of the skirt so it would fit my short backed horse. And the great part is, it fits my horse perfectly! It is one of the most beautiful saddles I have seen and now the smile on my face is still there every time I go out for a ride!
Dislikes: I honestly can't think of a thing.
Quality: As I had mentioned earlier, the Amish craftsmanship is incredible. And if you like a little or a lot of tooling they will do it - at no extra charge! And it's not the cookie cutter machine stamping, it's hand stamped. Plus I love the Equi-Fit flexible tree and so does my horse!
Summary: I would highly recommend Dixieland Gaited Saddles to anyone looking to purchase a beautiful custom made gaited saddle at a very reasonable price. You can also order a matching bridle and breast collar. Cynthia is a wonderful person to work with. Oh, and I forgot to mention, they even had the saddle ready almost a month before the original estimated completion date. Talk about exceeding customer expectations! Thank you Cynthia and Dixieland Gaited Saddles for making my dreams come true. Happy Trails!
