Bayer Animal Health
Marquis Antiprotozoal Paste
Horse Health and Well Being

Manufacturer: Bayer Animal Health
Model: Marquis Antiprotozoal Paste
Category: Horse Health and Well Being

Purchase: My gelding got EPM two years ago. I purchased this for $900 per month for a total of about 6 months, not including other veterinary costs/hospitalization and tests.

Likes: It eventually worked. Eventually, after spending a lot of time, money, and heartbreak, seeing my horse appear to get better and relapse, again and again, my horse fighting laminitis during each relapse on top of the protist that was killing him. But it eventually saved his life. It worked, when the Navigator did not, and the Navigator was supposed to be the stronger drug. The company was very good about keeping in touch on my progress and bought the last two month's supply of Marquis for me, since I'd spent so much on it already.

Dislikes: It didn't work in just one month of treatment, or even two...I had to do a couple months of single dosing and another couple months double dosing the drug, and when all was said and done, my gelding was left with residual nerve damage that left him unrideable; he was mostly blind; and because of the nerve damage he is prone to laminitis due to the uneven distribution of weight on his limbs. Each time he relapsed he would get laminitis, which would mean hospitalization for him. I had finally saved up enough for my own farm and the down payment went instead to saving my 22 year old, $350 rescued gelding with heaves, because I loved him more than a house.

Quality: Four individual tubes, dose was 2CC's per day, tube was the size of a tube of bute and the paste was white, so it didn't bother my horse to take the drug as much as the Navigator did.

Summary: It worked, but not without consequences. I don't know if I could take the heartache of EPM again, and if I had the problem in the future I might just opt to put my horse down. I am glad that the disease is gone, but the Marquis didn't work as I would have liked it to; even without the disease, my gelding's immune system has weakened and he is prone to problems. He has become weak and frail, when I used to ride him for hours every day, even with the heaves. It is sad to watch the horse I love so much in such a frail condition. This is an expensive drug that might be more effective on a younger horse, but it is going to cost a lot of money so seriously think about whether or not you want to go through with it.
