Likes: For the price, I think this halter has more options than any other halter on the market. It has padding on the nose and crown to prevent rubs, it has a breakaway fuse for safe turnout, it has a throat snap, and the chin has an adjustable buckle. It is very attractive too-comes in red, green, and purple plaid, as well as solids too.
Dislikes: The padding on the crown in on elastic so it is adjustable when you buckle the halter. The padding usually ends up sitting all the way to end of the crown on the far side. Doesn't seem to bother my horse though. Also, the chicago screw that is used to hold the leather fuse in place is very short. One or two twists and it becomes unseated. I always check to make sure the screw is tight, and a little superglue or nail polish would fix this.
Quality: Found it to be good quality-the cheeks are triple layer webbing and everything else is double layer. My horse rubs her halter on everything and has a habit of getting halters off, so these halters have been stomped into the mud without much ill effect. I put them in the washing machine and they came out great. My only problem was that a horse stepped on the halter when she got it off and it bent the throat snap badly. When I tried to bend it back the snap broke. I removed the broken snap and replaced it with the screw in replacement throat snap that is on the market now.
Summary: I have to have a turnout halter for my horse, as my barn requires the halters to be left on. This one is far better than the ones with full leather crowns. If you need a turnout buy this one. My horse has broken two leather fuses in 6 months of turnout, so I know this halter will break if it gets caught on something. Just keep some replacement fuses on hand. The fuses cost about $2, which is a lot cheaper than buying new leather crowns!
