Model: 500 AP
Category: All Purpose Saddles
Purchase: I was given this saddle about 3 years ago for my birthday. We paid about 400$ for this saddle, and as an offer from Dover Saddlery, the saddle came with stirrup leathers, fillis irons and a girth. I chose this saddle because it was synthetic, and is very easy to clean with water and a towel. I also liked that it came in black- that was the color I chose, and I'm still very happy with it. Jumping with all black tack has a very unique look.
Likes: The color was what I originally liked about it, but I have yet to be unhappy with this saddle. The knee rolls are movable, and they give you many options to create the most comfortable and secure ride for yourself. This saddle is an all purpose saddle, and works wonderfully for an eventer, or someone who rides outside regularly- the synthetic material is awesome when you ride through water, mud, snow or anything else that usually damages leather tack. This saddle is well-balanced for jumping and dressage, and the changeable gullet system lets you ride horses with very different shapes in the same saddle.
Dislikes: I've found that this saddle needs a lollipop-type pad on some of the horses that I ride, which is inconvenient but doesn't make me dislike this saddle. This saddle has also lost one of the screws in the gullet when I was riding. The saddle stayed together wonderfully, and the screw can be replaced from your local hardware store or the company, but I'd suggest checking that the screws are tight on a pretty regular basis. Also, this saddle sometimes has the tendency to squeak which is annoying. I really like this saddle, and only have rather minute things to complain about.
Quality: After three years of hard use, I have very little to complain about. The texture under my leg/stirrup leathers, as well as the synthetic leathers have worn smooth with a different shine, which some people may dislike. The cantle has a few dings, but on a whole this saddle is holding up very well. The billets have stretched a little and the inside of the saddle is starting to show salt marks from being sweated through.
Summary: This saddle is a wonderful investment, especially for someone looking for their first saddle. It is easy to find matching tack for this saddle, and the synthetic material is wonderful for people short on time. Some people are put off by "synthetic" but most people think my saddle is leather, and seem surprised that it's a wintec. This saddle is very comfortable for both horse and rider- wintecs are the only brand we put on our sensitive thoroughbreds for a reason. Overall, as a rider who has progressed from learning to jump to novice eventing in this saddle, I have to say I love this saddle and recommend it to anyone- beginner or otherwise, young or old. This is an investment that lasts, and one you will not regret!
