Category: Horse Treats

Purchase: I usually purchase these treats at Stagecoach West in Irving, NY or TSC in Hamburg, NY. They are about eight dollars for a five pound bag.

Likes: They don't fall apart much when I carry them in a fanny pack. My horses work hard for them, so they must like them. They have selenium, which is deficient in our area. My horses eat one quickly so we can get back to work.

Dislikes: When I try to feed them from the saddle I occasionally drop them and I worry about my fingers. My riding horse (other horse is retired)is very large and blind on the left. I feed from both sides so he doesn't get one-sided, it is a stretch for both of us. If the treats were stick shaped it would be easier. These treats have supplemental copper so I don't feel safe feeding them to my other herbivores. I wish they came in a larger bag.

Quality: They store well in a cookie jar I have at the barn. Other treats I have tried made more dust. They smell good long after opening the bag. They survive well if left in a coat or jean pocket. So far I haven't washed any but would throw them out if I did. Just nice to not have stains, dust and mold on my clothes.

Summary: My horses have tried all the flavors and they definitely prefer this one. There was a study done on horse preferences, I read about it in a European horse magazine and the top flavors were fenugreek, banana, cherry, rosemary, cumin, carrot, peppermint and oregano. My old horse likes apples, maybe due to his teeth but he prefers the peppermint treats to the apple ones. My young horse has EPSM so I have to be careful of his carb. intake. I was using Cracklin Oat Bran cereal but it made a huge mess. If he doesn't like a treat he actually spits it out. Both horses are clicker trained so size of treat when training a new behavior is important.
