Purchase: My gelding pulled a shoe and it was going to be a couple of weeks before the farrier was able to come out. I wanted something to put on his foot that I could turn him out in and that would stand up to him running around on it, going through the mud, etc. I paid $129 for the set of two boots at a local tack store.
Likes: These are extremely well made. I call them his 'nikes'. They were easy to put on, and his hoof fit perfectly. It started to rub a little on his pastern but after wrapping it in vet wrap that was no longer a problem. He was on full turnout in a large field with other horses and it never came off. When it got dirty it was easy just to hose it clean. I even rode him with it on and had no issues.
Dislikes: The top seems to give too much space and caused rubbing on his pastern. I think the company could possible make it smaller based on the size of the hoof and that would stop the issue. The velcro does get dirty quickly (shavings, dirt, etc), but a velcro brush cleaned it out easily.
Quality: The sole is a hard plastic type material that held up well. He wore it for 2 weeks and after cleaning the boot it looked brand new again. I didn't have any problems with it falling apart. It is made so that it is easy to clean.
Summary: Although I'm not much of a trail rider I would imagine this boot would hold up very well. My horse puts a beating on everything he wears, and this held up very well. When I had one of these on his front hoof, and just a regular shoe on the other he was still well balanced and rideable. Definitely a good buy!
