Purchase: My horse has some dental problems so he can't wear a bit comfortably so I have to use a hackamore. I was using the rubber covered bicycle chain type, but that had a little too much whoa for him. I had heard that the Little "S" is milder so I decided to try one. I found one at Tractor Supply for $36. But it was later I learned from my friend that they had accidentally marked this hackamore at a whole sale price that day. Retail price is about $48! Man did I get a deal!
Likes: It is true that this hackmore has a lot less whoa then a bicycle chain hackamore. But it also seems to have better steering. I am just getting into gaming my horse and this hackamore seems pretty good for the direct reining needed for gaming, unlike the the bicycle chain type which I find to be a poor to nothing turner.
Dislikes: The only thing I don't like about this hackamore is the evil uncovered wire bit hobble. I wrapped it with medical tape to make sure it wouldn't accidentally cut my horse under his chin, but I am thinking about taking it off completely and replacing with with something softer. It also came with a single link curb chain but those are hard to adjust and don't feel too good to the horse, so I replaced with with a double link curb chain like you find on many western bridles that use a curb bit.
Quality: Seems like it is good quality. I don't think it will break anytime soon.
Summary: Overall I give this product an A for gentleness (if I wasn't gentle my horse would definitely let me hear about it.) while still giving control. I do however, give this thing an F on aesthetics because it looks kind of like a torture contraption on the poor horse. It is not a very attractive hackamore, but it does its job.
