Purchase: I bought a Mary's Custom reining saddle from a friend who saw it at a Southern California retail store and couldn't believe the high quality and beautifully tooled saddle was for sale at the price of $850.00. She and I are both "tackaholics" and she knew a great deal when she saw one. The Herman Oak leather is highest quality, as are all the other details of the saddle. After I wrested the saddle away from my friend, I contacted Mary and she made me a matching breast collar and flank cinch with beautiful matching tooling. They are absolutely top quality and only cost $250.00 for both items.
Likes: I like everything about this saddle -- it is built on full quarter horse bars that fit my Quarter Horse, who is wide, mutton-withered, and has a huge rolling shoulder action. It also fits my Hackney Horse, who is wide and round, and my Appy mare, who is similarly a barrel with legs. The seat is the most comfortable I have ever sat in, and the butterfly cut allows for close contact with no bulk under your leg. I am a trail rider, not a reiner, but this saddle is comfortable for me and my three horses for hours of hard riding.
Dislikes: Nothing.
Quality: Mary's saddles are every bit as well constructed as saddles that sell for over twice the price.
Summary: Mary is a wonderful person to work with and she and her team are making some of the best saddles around. The breast collar and flank cinch are truly outstanding. I have owned many saddles in my years of owning hard-to-fit horses, and this is certainly the best one for a lot less money than any of the others. I hope Mary never retires, as who knows when I will want another saddle. It will come from her for sure!
