Purchase: I purchased the pair of boots and four First+Ice inserts from the manufacturer, MacKinnon for a total of $85.
Likes: They have a strong velcro closure that fits snugly around the horses' fetlocks, and the First+Ice polymer packs form around the curve of the hoof wall and stay cold for at least half an hour.
Dislikes: I followed the manufacturer's directions to keep my horse in cross ties while the boots are on his feet, but if he moves much and steps on the side of his foot, or shuffles his foot or paws, it works the "skirt" against the "shoe" where they are attached with glue, and the skirt eventually begins to detach from the shoe.
Quality: The "sole" of the boot is a flexible polymer which may be almost too flexible. The neoprene "boot" that wraps around the horses' fetlock and skirts over the hoof is only attached to the polymer shoe with glue.
Summary: The product works well as long as the horse stands still while the boot is on. If the manufacturer could improve the construction of the shoe and the way the boot is attached to the shoe, I think the product would be fantastic. It does the job. It just isn't as durable as it needs to be.
