Manufacturer: Cavello
Model: Simple Boot
Category: Horse Boots and Wraps
Purchase: I prefer to keep my horses barefoot year round but needed a boot for my Arabians when we ventured out on hard roads or over rougher stony ground. I bought these boots in May 2007 at a local tack store near Ottawa, Ontario, for $124.95 Canadian.
Likes: These boots (size 1) happen to fit several of my horses. So the boots have been getting a lot of use and have held up extremely well all summer and fall. Good quality construction, the leather breaks in quickly after several rides and the boot does not seem to rub any of my horses heels. Easy to clean and they dry in several hours ready for the next use.
Dislikes: The small plastic keepers to hold on the velcro straps. These are a bit fiddly to do up and annoying to put over the strap but they do work very well. The plastic keepers are also not attached to the boot so they can easily be lost if you don't close the velcro strap on the boot after taking them off. The gaiters I only used for the first few outings while breaking in the boots. The gaiters wore through quickly and after that I have been using the boots without them as the boots fit well and don't rub so I don't need them.
Quality: The boots are solidly made, and are holding up well even with lots of use and several horses wearing them. The bottoms are sturdy plastic and have drain holes so even crossing rivers the boots stay on and can drain. I have also rolled the toe on the boot with a hoof rasp to make for an easier breakover. I found my horses were doing this naturally so helped the process along with the hoof rasp.
Summary: A very good boot, well made and holding up nicely under lots of use and a reasonable price too. The Simple boot is certainly a lot cheaper than the other boots available in Canada that I have seen. I would buy these again and hope to find a red pair for sale next time. Suggestions for improvement are to brightly colour the plastic keepers so you stand some chance of seeing them if they fall off, or better still add another velcro strap as a keeper over the top of the 2 main straps rather than the plastic keeper.
