Purchase: I went to www.horsetacknz about some stirrups to help with an ankle problem...and came home with a treeless saddle! My Andalusian/TB mare has long-term saddle-fit and glucose intolerance issues, and I need to be able to exercise her beyond wandering bareback around the farm! I will be riding a couple of Paso xbreds so want a saddle which wont inhibit gait. The saddle, girth and stirrups cost about NZ$1500 all up.
Likes: My mare and I LOVE our new saddle. On a Skito pad it is very stable, even when I left the breastplate at home on a forest trail ride. I've sat a few high-spirited leaps, spooks, and an unexpected jump across a drain. It has an optional seat bolster which I'd recommend for comfort. The leather is supple, I love the well-thought out girthing system and the Sensation girth has made my mare a lot less girthy.
Dislikes: When I had the saddle on trial it got marked if I looked at it! I'm not so worried now it's mine and the marks buff out with saddle conditioner. The stirrups set in 'hard-use' mode (recommended for taller / larger riders) take a bit of getting used to. But shorter, lighter riders can use the free-swing option and enduro-types can go for a set-up off the base of the flap.
Quality: The construction of this saddle is beautiful, it looks like a saddle not a space-ship accessory, LOL! At the base of the flap where the girth straps come out and the stirrup set-up anchors, the thinner leather tends to pucker up a little. Over time, I'm not sure how durable this saddle will be, but for schooling and light trail rides it is great. There is felt underneath and you can adjust the amount of stuffing in the pommel and cantle yourself. You can also shift the stirrup placement to best suit your own needs.
Summary: This saddle is awesome! It is more affordable than other treeless saddles I've tried. I can sit in a Centered seat and my legs are in contact with my horse's sides. My horse's happy new attitude and slim waistline say it all!
