Purchase: Hawthorne Products online is where the liniment was purchased as it was unavailable through a local tack shop. I paid approximately sixteen dollars with shipping for a sixteen ounce bottle.
Likes: I appreciated the quick turn-around in handling from Hawthorne Products and the extensive information given me on the phone about the product prior to purchasing.
Dislikes: The Choate's Liniment was purchased to apply by hand rubbing to my aged horse's arthritic hocks for increased circulation and pain relief. Unfortunately, I hardly had time to evaluate its effectiveness as a liniment in the four applications I applied because the extremely pungent odor that came from it was almost caustic. Everyone around the five foot radius of the grooming stall I was using remarked on it and I sneezed repeatedly just trying to get it on and for hours afterward my sinus area was irritated. It was applied in a well-ventilated open stall area with both aisle doors to the barn open as well and it still did this.
Quality: The bottle came without a pump spray so I had to pour it out into my hand which proved very wasteful and messy in application.
Summary: I would not recommend this product as it is too strong for the user to apply (at least this user), and therefore, impossible to evaluate its affect on the horse. This is too bad because from everything I've read about Hawthorne Products they produce a valuable line of other items and seem to have longstanding and extensive experience with horses.
