Myler Bit
Grade 1 Bit
Training Equipment

Manufacturer: Myler Bit
Model: Grade 1 Bit
Category: Training Equipment

Purchase: I bought this bit from a local tack shop and paid about $130 NZ dollars

Likes: This bit is fantastic. The horses I have used it on LOVE it. It is extremely soft for their mouths, they relax into it. I like that each side is independent of the other so you can 'lift' the horses shoulder if he drops it. Both horses I use it on are big thoroughbreds I am schooling for dressage. I was riding one of these horses in an apple-mouth pelham - which he also loved - BUT he was tending to curl up and evade this bit in his schooling. The Myler has put paid to that. The other horse has just come to me, and was previously ridden in a tom thumb snaffle which he was obviously very uncomfortable in. He was showing all the classic signs of discomfort - opening his mouth wide, snaking his head etc. The minute I put the Myler on him, he changed. IN a week or two of schooling, he is totally accepting the bit and his training is coming on beautifully.

Dislikes: I am a little wary of the whole 'system' as it recommends moving up grades of bits - I kind of think - if the horse loves the bit why change? I guess I am about to find out. Also I don't like that the bit rings are so large. Mine is a D ring bit and this is huge. Would love to see the Myler with a loose ring Fulmer.

Quality: Beautifully constructed - very smooth, with copper inlays. very impressed.

Summary: In my experience of rehabilitating abused or problem horses, a lot of Thoroughbred horses do not do well in an ordinary snaffle. This is because the roof of their mouths can be quite low and the snaffle joint can bruise it. I have great success with the straight bar Apple mouth bits but needed a jointed bit for dressage. The Myler fits the bill perfectly. The joint is smooth and does not stick up. The bit sits in the horses mouth to allow room for the tongue to move comfortably. The horses love it and work beautifully in it.
