Purchase: I bought this Turtle Neck Coolmax Turnout Sheet over a year ago from Dover Saddlery. I paid then about $139 or so.
Likes: It has held up admirably. My horse loves to roll in the mud and the sheet stays where it belongs. He is at pasture all the time now and I never have problems with dangling straps or unhinged clips. Recently a horse bit him very hard and really tried to inflict damage on him; the sheet protected him 100%. It really is bite-proof!! It rained for a full day nonstop and my horse was completely dry underneath when I checked him at night. The liner is excellent as well and does seem to wick moisture away if I leave it on too long during the day (the moisture of him sweating.) The only place the sweat stays on his body is on the shoulder, where there is no Coolmax liner. This is an excellent top layer for hard weather and if you need warmth, you can put a stable blanket underneath.
Dislikes: There are only two concerns to consider about this sheet. First, it is so heavy duty, it hardly seems like a "sheet." This is a heavy duty rain coat, make no mistake about it. Second, the color is black only and so I remove it during the day because dark colors absorb the sun and create heat. I live in California so there is no cold air to balance the very bright sun. (It gets very cold at night - 33 degrees but it is quite warm 70 degrees in the day.) So I really wish they would make the same product in a lighter color. I had to buy a second waterproof sheet in a light color for day time with rain showers and I use this Turtle Neck for cold, rainy nights or long, sustained rains. Third, the top chest strap is a little high for my horse and I have to buckle it very loose so he can graze. Still, the straps keep the rain sheet very secure.
Quality: The material is VERY heavy duty. It is the ballistic nylon that is used to make luggage. It makes an excellent top layer for weather-proofing. I don't need a warming layer now, but I have in the past put a stable blanket under it. The Turtle Neck blanket combines them both but I prefer the option of having the rain sheet with and without insulation. The straps and clips and buckles are all well made and totally reliable.
Summary: This is one tough top layer for sure. If you need a really solid top layer for rain, sleet or heavy wind, this sheet will do the job. If you need warmth too, either add a blanket underneath or try the Turtle Neck blanket.
