Purchase: I purchased this halter from Dover Saddlery(doversaddlery.com). I bought this halter as an inexpensive turnout halter. i paid approx. $40 plus shipping.
Likes: You can order this halter with three different lining(padding) colors. Black on burgundy, brown on hunter, and black on white. I chose the black on white, because I thought it was the most classy:-) Both the crown and nose is lined. There are plenty of places to adjust this halter, the nose, and both sides of the crown. The leather is double stitched, so it is strong. I like leather halters because they are strong enough for everyday use, but if your horse gets caught up on something during turnout, he can break loose. This halter comes in full size and oversize.
Dislikes: The full size that I ordered runs fairly large, so I wouldn't recommend this halter unless your horse's head is very large. The oversize would probably fit a large draft horse or draft cross. The leather was in fact stitched very well, but the leather itself is of poor quality. The leather had small scratches in it when I first opened the package, but I didn't mind because I was only using it for around the barn. The leather was quite stiff so I oiled it a lot, but it really didn't make a difference. I am sure this halter was dyed, because the black is starting to fade to a dark brown.
Quality: The leather is cheap, but the stitching is uniform and strong. The buckles are cheap nickel, and have already shown some distortion in the coloring. The snap on the throatlatch broke within the first month of use, so i had to replace the snap, no biggie.
Summary: I would recommend this halter for an extra halter to have around the barn. Although i would not pay $40 again for it. I have purchased similar halters for under $30. I sure the fact that it is padded raises the price.
