Heavy Denier Nylon Hay Bag
Barn and Stable Misc
Manufacturer: Tough-1
Model: Heavy Denier Nylon Hay Bag
Category: Barn and Stable Misc
Purchase: I purchased two of these off of ebay for $13.50 each. I had made some temporary stalls in my pole barn out of round pen panels and needed some way to keep the hay off of the ground, as the horses kept stomping on it and not eating it.
Likes: This is an excellent quality hay bag. It is true that the nylon mesh front actually does reduce wasted hay over the open-hole type. They can still drop hay out of their mouths onto the ground, but this very much reduced how much they wasted over regular hay bags and especially over putting it on the ground. They did not rip and still look brand new. They have a wide color selection, so you can choose what you want. They are easy to fill (because the shape is more similar to the way a bale is than the normal hay bags, they fill easier).
Dislikes: One thing I would prefer to see is a bigger hay bag. I can fit about 1 1/2 flakes from a small square bale (about 8 packed inches thick) of hay into a single bag. I do not consider this one full meal for an adult horse. I would like to get at least 2 full flakes in there (about 12 inches of thick packed hay). This means that some of my horses need to be fed twice to get a full meal (I might just have to put two hay bags in each stall). Since they are rarely in these stalls except in severe weather it has not caused much of a problem, but I could imagine that if I used this daily it might get old having to fill two hay bags or having to fill one hay bag four times per day. On the other hand, they don't waste as much hay, so maybe they can eat less?
Quality: Heavy, heavy denier canvas hay bag. Top-loading, looks like it is sideways and has two straps on top. The mesh vent for the hay in front keeps more hay in the bag and requires horses to eat more slowly than hay nets or regular hay bags with the open holes. Even my aggressive eaters can't rip this one.
Summary: This is a nice hay bag that could only be improved by making it a bit bigger. It is no smaller than normal hay bags, but not as big as extra-large hay bags. It would be good for shows, camping, or anywhere you can frequently fill it (or if you have an easy keeper or small horse it would probably be fine for size). I am thoroughly impressed with the quality and durability, and I like how much it has reduced my hay losses.
